Description

Looking for some serious summer fun, collaborative future-building, and a sneak-peak into an artist’s process as they create work? Join us for playtesting Solarpunk Futures, a new artist's game designed by members of Solarpunk Surf Club! Participants will be introduced to game play, playtest a few rounds, and offer feedback to the artists. This is a unique opportunity to directly shape the direction of an artist’s project before it’s available to the general public. Registrants will be notified of the outdoor meeting place prior to the start of the game session.

Solarpunk Futures is a rules-light role playing game where players imagine the pathways to a desirable world from the perspective of a utopian future. Players use a deck of cards to adopt Personae (e.g. grower, engineer, newcomer) and work together using Tools (e.g. recycled materials, equipment library, off-grid energy) and Values (e.g. care, responsibility, usufruct) to overcome a set of real-world Challenges (e.g. borders, ableist infrastructure, climate refugee crisis). Through dialogue and collaborative worldbuilding, collective and visionary narratives emerge of a new society, along with plausible scenarios for how to get there.

Max Puchalsky is an artist and cultural worker involved in a range of projects that reflect his interest in collaboration and engagement with local community issues. He holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and has taught with the UW Art Department, Arts + Literature Laboratory, and the Bayview International Center for Education And The Arts. Max is Creative Director of Midwest Story Lab and a member of the arts collective Solarpunk Surf Club. He was born at 354.39 ppm on the isthmus called Madison.
